Six Mile Swamp
Pat Davis is right: the stream is high and fast and swollen. In addition to his pics, here's another one from the Six Mile Falls area.
This is the area where spectators normally stand to watch the paddlers go through the falls.
As you can see (click photo to enlarge) the "vulture" area is completely flooded. The water goes all the way back to the Hudson Road!
UPDATE 4/18/07: Here is a closer shot of Six Mile Falls (taken today).
Where did the "jaws" go? (Click photo to enlarge)

commenting on the size of the river. the area known as "shopping cart alley" is absolutly ugly. well its only ugly if your a paddler. voltures will love it this year. I would say the water is moving about 25-30 mph. So we should really be breaking some records this year, If the water stays up. I haven't peeked at six mile falls this morning but as soon as I go back in town I will swing by and snap some photos for you all (of both places)
Thanks paddler boy. We really appreciate the pictures!
Pat,
I agree on an ugly cart hole,it will be tough running that, hard right is really the only option,if u punch those waves,in a canoe, your going to swamp..i dont know if people know this, but you can portage that area,as long as you put back in before the next bridge down, you loose some time, but stay afloat. Also anyone running 6mile thats big too, hard left is best right now,my opinion, but watch out for trees, its swift and powerful over there,i dont think any canoe can handle down the middle right now,if so you need lots of flotation.Im going to try to run 6mile falls down to finish later today, maybe after 3 or so,scout the route some...please anyone else running the river today,be careful and be prepaired, wetsuits are a must, stay away from downtown, pull out below shopping cart, high tides will smash you into bridges downtown.
Thanks for the stream updates guys. Let us know what you find out today. I'll be checking things out this afternoon as well (although not in a boat!)
Holy smokes - that water looks crazy. Do you think it will be safe for average or novice paddlers? Would a one week postponement of the race be an option to consider?
ok just got of the phone with BP&R no postponement will occur, will not know about the flour mill dam-to valley ave. portage untill raceday maybe day before. also about 500 paddlers registered so far, so if the majority of them are canoes we are looking at about 300 boats so far.al I will send mike the photos from the river today. looks like hell. about 5 feet from the top of the water to the bottom of the bridge at six mile, the volture sitting area really looks like the water park. and the ledges above six mile falls looks more dangerous then the falls.
Excellent update, Pat - thanks. Looking forward to your pics.
I am curious about the extended portage (if they go with it). Would this mean that the Shopping Cart area would be bypassed altogether?
