Passy River Race: Fun In The Sun

The Passy River Race on Saturday was a blast. The weather was beautiful (I have a mild sunburn to prove it) and the water was truly inviting.

Over 100 paddlers participated this year. It was nice to see so many young paddlers involved in this year's race.

In part, this is clearly the result of hard work by the Maine Canoe & Kayak Racing Organization (MaCKRO) to engage young people in the sport of paddling. If the St. George and Passy River races are any indication, these efforts seem to be working!

I've posted some race photos here.

The "shopping cart" got us last year. You give great advice on how to approach "6 miles fall"; got any for the "cart"? We went river left last year and hit that big rock.

Thanks!

Hi Mark -
Usually the Shopping Cart is best approached by going river right and hugging the rocks, but that wave train following the drop will be tricky for some people no matter what they do.
Seems like river left is usually a little too low, but it didn't look too bad a few days ago. However, the water has been dropping since then, and I'll have to take another look at it on Friday.

Actually I should amend that, Mark. Just took a look at Shopping Cart this evening. It's already lower and slower than when I looked at it two days ago. The tide plays a role in that to some extent but I would say river right is the way to go. River left is looking pretty bony, and the rapids aren't too bad at all. I think it will be a repeat of last year. Wish we had more hydro pushing through there!
