Wrapping It Up / Hibernation

Bummer.
I missed out on the fun this year as both a photographer and spectator, mostly because of an out-of-state trip and other scheduling problems.

I was a no-show at the first five whitewater races of the season in Maine (St. George, Passy, Souadabscook, Marsh Stream and yes, the Big K) and I hope this doesn't happen next year! The whitewater season doesn't seem to last long enough.



On the other hand, I did manage to renovate and update the canoe race website and I've received a lot of positive feedback, which was great. The addition of a presence in social media (Facebook and Twitter) seems to be going well.

On Facebook, for example, the Kenduskeag Stream Canoe Race page has surpassed 2,000 "likes"...and it's growing. Information, updates and photos are now shared quickly and effectively, judging by my stats. All very cool and there's more to come (hint: videos).

Water Levels, Weather & Preregistration

How is the water level looking this year? In a nutshell: not bad and certainly better than last year.

It would be nice to have some steady rains ahead of this Saturday, but that doesn't appear to be in the cards according to WLBZ.

Still, at 5+ ft. of water and a flow a bit under 600 cfs (according to current readings from the USGS stream gauge), the 47th Kenduskeag looks to be a fun race for paddlers! There are reports of a few bony spots here and there, but nothing out of the norm.

I am out of town at the moment and so I do not have any photos of the stream to share here, but if you happen to have any digital snaps of the stream (Six Mile Falls, Valley Stream, Shopping Cart, etc.) by all means feel free to share them. The Kenduskeag Facebook Page would be an ideal place to post your pics!

Last but certainly not least, you have until this Friday at 1pm to preregister for the Kenduskeag. Preregistration is HIGHLY recommended - it saves you time and money. See the Bangor Parks & Rec page for more info.

Souadabscook Stream Race

Date: Saturday, April 13th, 2013
Time: Registration begins at 8:00am. 9:00am start for sprint. 12:00 noon start for Downriver race.n
Place: Hampden, Maine

Marsh Stream Race

Date: Sunday, April 14th, 2013
Time: 8:00am registration for sprint. Downriver race starts at 12:00 noon.
Place:Winterport/Frankfort, Maine.

Kenduskeag TV Coverage

For those of you who were wondering:

WABI-TV5 in Bangor plans to cover the 47th Annual Kenduskeag Stream Canoe Race from the bridge overlooking Six Mile Falls.

The race begins at 8:30am on Saturday, April 20th. (The first paddlers usually arrive at Six Mile Falls after 9:30am.)

Passy River Race - 4/6/13

The 2013 Maine whitewater season continues with the Passy River Race in Waldo (near Belfast) this Saturday. Just a little over two weeks remain until the Kenduskeag!

Date: Saturday, March 30
Time: 11am
Place: Savage Road, Littlefield Farm in Waldo, Maine.
Course: Race starts at the Littlefield Farm. The first mile is flat water with many curves. Course passes under a cement bridge to another mile of flat water followed by a short stretch of Class II rapids. A two-mile stretch of flat water to the Rolerson’s bridge, then Class I, II and III whitewater for a mile and a half, leading to a flat water stretch to the finish.
Registration: 8-10:30am, $20.
