i found half of the end of a LL Bean canoe paddle. it has the name "Smith" on it and "9297" which is the last four digits of their phone number. if you want it back i have it, or you can know that it didnt survive and i only have a piece of it.
For over 1 and a half hours, Mike S and I pulled out over 60 boats and their tired occupants at the end of the race. The only 'loose gear' we had turned over to us by these folks were one shorter yellow blowmolded kayak and one black plastic kayak paddle - NOT necessarily related to each other. These were landed on river right near the stonework compass monument - hopefully picked up by their owners, or maybe the BGR P&R. I've never seen so many boats and so much gear with IDs on them. Even something as simple as duct tape with magic marker. It doesn't prevent theft but does make it easy to return the inanimate race jetsam to the human flotsam. I hope we didn't add much to these...
